Savage and Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Enter into an Agreement to operate a Bulk Transload Facility in Chicago Area

SALT LAKE CITY – July 20, 2011  Savage Companies (Savage) and the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad (IHB) have entered into a terminal services agreement under which Savage will operate a multi-user transload facility owned by IHB in Franklin Park, IL. Savage and IHB will jointly market the transload facility to new customers.

The Transload Facility is located approximately 4 miles south of Chicago O’Hare International Airport and within close proximity to Interstates 294 and 90. The 10 acre Transload Facility has 40 active railcar transloading spots and houses a 4000 square foot warehouse onsite. The Transload Facility is capable of handling food grade, dry bulk, liquid bulk, break bulk and hazardous materials. The Transload Facility is switched daily by the IHB.

The IHB Railroad offers competitive rail service in conjunction will all the railroads serving the Chicago terminal and has daily interchange with the BNSF, CN, CP, CSX, NS, and UP railroads.

Savage & IHB are currently in discussions with potential customers to use the Transload Facility.

The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad is the largest switch carrier in the U.S. with 55 route miles of mainline track running is an arc from Franklin Park, IL to Portage and Burns Harbor, IN.

A growing fleet of approximately 1,400 freight cars is geared predominately to the steel industry. The industrial traffic base includes 4 of the 5 largest steel producers in the U.S. Indiana’s International Port at Burns Harbor, IN and oil refineries, corn millers, grain elevators, chemical plants, warehouses, lumber transloading, and bulk transfer operations.TheIHB also operates as an intermediate switch carrier between the 12 trunk-line railroads for traffic interchanged between them in the Chicago Terminal.

IHB has three major yards; the Blue Island Yard which is a 44 track hump yard located in Riverdale, IL which lies in the center of the railroad, Gibson Yard, (Hammond, IN) the largest automotive switching terminal in the country, and Michigan Avenue Yard (East Chicago, IN) which supports the extensive steel mill infrastructure which accounts for IHBs primary business.
